ON THE LODGE
La Chaumine Skiers
Lodge
The Skiers Lodge is a rustic alpine timber chalet. It is located
3 kms above La Grave, situated at the edge of the smaller village
of Ventelon at an altitude
of 1 782m. (5847 ft.) The Lodge faces due south directly onto the north face
of the majestic glaciated peak of `La Meije´ (3983 m/13065 ft.), providing
a truly exhilerating and ever-changing view. The prestigious Michelin Guide
of France ranked the view as 3 stars, the highest possible rating and considered
`Worth a Journey´.
The intimate accommodation includes a terrace, a spacious dining room, an
extended lounge area with stunning panoramic views, an open fireplace,
comfortable furnishings and a fully stocked bar. Situated on the lower level
you will find a quieter public area, where there is a sauna, with probably
the best view in the world.
The focal point of the evening is dinner. The modern international culinary
style cuisine emanating from our kitchen has been growing in stature and
popularity with our hungry yet discerning guests.

The Skiing in La Grave/La
Meije
La Grave is one of the few places world-wide which can boast an incredible
2150m (7050ft) vertical drop. The lift ascends from the village of
La Grave to stations at 1800, 2400m, 3200m,
and finally to Dome de la Lauze at
3550m.
A typical ski descent offers limitless variety from tame to steep terrain
commencing on a vast glacier, proceeding down spectacular open bowls, winding
its way through small chutes, crossing glacial morains into seemingly endless
steeps and deeps in the serenity of the forest.
It can also lead you to the Freaux Couloir, a 900m, free floating elevator
drop to the valley below.
Legendary descents like the Girose glacier, with direct lines of 2 300m explains
why so many return to challenge themselves
and the mountain. For those looking
for classic extréme itineraries in the alpes, the Enfechores and the
Pan de Rideau can provide the answer. Departing from 3550m via the Col de
la Lauze one can take a fairly easy descent into the Vallon de la Selle in
the National Parc des Ecrins. This route delivers you at St. Christophe a
small authentic mountain village with just 23 inhabitants. In the local bar
you may meet the ancestors of Gaspard de la Meije a local guide who succeeded
in making the first ascent of La Meije in 1877.
A Revolution in Attitude, Style and Equipment is making the sport better
than ever. It is not surprising that when the International Ski Manufacturers
wanted to launch their new breed of 'Extreme' Skis they chose La Grave as
the venue. The long runs over varying terrain combined with the untouched
and unpoliced routes has given the freedom to create and shape an exciting
new outlook on style, attitude and ultimately equipment.
The devoted local skiers and boarders had long ago adopted the attitude that
the 'Free-Rider' must take responsibility for his own safety. As the world
of free skiing and boarding started to push the limits of equipment out pops
the most amazing all purpose boards ever conceived thus making modern free
riding better than ever. The new performance fat category is bursting into
life with a design that works with an understanding of what a 21st century
free skier really wants... all terrain
carving trajectory, a wide waist and deep side-cut, a board that floats in
the deepest powder, holds an edge on the steepest terrain and leaves perfect
pencil-like tracks on any groomed run. The best all terrain tool.
Whether your passion is skiing, snowboarding or telemarking we will not fail
in finding you suitable terrain and exhilarating routes. Providing you possess
an adventurous spirit we will show you the ultimate in ski enjoyment.
We must stress that La Meije/La Grave ski area is not a resort adapted for
skiers, here it is the skier that must adapt to the mountain. The whole mountain
is Off Piste with no groomed trails. If you are an "advanced" skier we will
willingly guide you to what we consider to be the best lift serviced skiing
in the world.
In close proximity to La Grave there are many resorts with their own micro
climates
and in our "Never Ending Search For Powder"
our guide team may propose one of numerous possible day trips.
Within an hours drive from La Grave we can guide you to 'secret' off piste
spots in Alp d´Huez with over 2000 vertical mtrs (7000 ft) of adventure
skiing or Serre Chevalier and Claviere with their steeps, deeps and marvellous
trees. Weather and snow conditions permitting why not try the phenomenal
heliskiing in Alta Val Susa (Italy).
